Who was St Jarlath?
St. Jarlath, the Saintly Irish Bishop and Abbot, was a Great Teacher who founded an Irish College. So why was St. Jarlath declared a saint? He knew of life's challenges: "Is that your final answer? How do you want to live?" He wanted to educate and bring Christ to others! He had learned a wonderful way to live out the right final answer to life's important questions! To develop and maintain his strength of character--so he could be strong enough to do the right thing in his life--and to pray for the needs of others in this life as well as for the souls in purgatory, he practiced frequent fasting, adoration and mortification. That is, he practiced frequent self-denial, meaning that he often did extra good deeds and sometimes he gave up sweets, desserts and other good things so that others could have more. To recognize God as the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Maker of the Universe,
St. Jarlath, bent his knee up to 300 times during his daily prayer. He also had the gift of prophecy with accompanying miracles; that means he could see important future events in people's lives to help them do the right thing to love and serve God and themselves and others in this life so that one day they might also more easily know how to get to Heaven. As a great teacher he wanted his students to know how to figure out and live according to the best answers to life's important questions.
